Alexander Montgomery: A Major Benefactor

Alexander Montgomery, a prominent San Francisco merchant, was instrumental in the development of the San Anselmo campus of the Seminary. His generous contribution of $250,000 laid the foundation for the campus’s growth and development.

Additional Donation for Chapel Construction

As Alexander Montgomery approached the end of his life, he made an additional donation of $50,000 specifically for the construction of Montgomery Chapel. This Romanesque-style memorial chapel stands as a lasting tribute to his generosity and vision.

The Cornerstone Laid in 1894

The cornerstone of Montgomery Chapel was laid in 1894, marking the beginning of its construction and signifying its future importance as a spiritual and architectural landmark.

Final Resting Place of its Benefactor

Alexander Montgomery was buried in the chapel in 1897, just a few days before the chapel was officially dedicated. This makes the chapel not only a place of worship and reflection but also the final resting place of one of the Seminary’s most significant benefactors.
